January is certainly not the cheapest time of year. With the dreaded ‘back to school’ shopping, we all need a helping hand to save a few extra rands here and there. Whether that be paying school fees in advance or simply making a list to cross off those unnecessary extras, here are some useful money saving tips that might help you learn something new.

As easy as 1, 2, 3

Maybe the best (and possibly most convenient) place to start is with last year’s uniform. Before it all gets rehung in the wardrobe or thrown away completely, check to see if it is fit to last another term.

Whilst doing so, make a list and set a budget to prevent any overspending. Studies have found that those who write a shopping list buy less, and therefore save money, as they refrain from any unnecessary and unplanned spending.

There are plenty of pre-prepped lists online if you need a starting point, along with stationery packs on the likes of Takealot, that may end up saving you a fortune online in comparison to numerous singular purchases.

Online is the new second-hand

Online deals and savvy second-hand shopping may be the key to keeping those extra rands in your back pocket.

By choosing to surf the web rather than trawl the malls, there are plenty of ways to easily find the best deal. PriceCheck allows you to compare thousands of retailers and therefore save on both time and money. Make sure to look out for online discount codes too – because who doesn’t love a bargain?

Speaking of, second-hand does not always mean unwearable or trash. Many uniforms can be worn again and again. So, if you know of a second-hand shop near you, it’s worth a look, as it might just save you the extra cents you need for an important purchase elsewhere.

Planning ahead is the way forward

When it comes to the cost of school fees, the best way to get a discount is to pay annually in advance if you can. Discounts may also apply if you choose to pay quarterly, however these would be significantly less. Some schools also offer a reduction in fees if there is more than one child attending, so find out if you qualify for it.

If neither of these apply, it may be worth saving that year-end bonus – as nice as it would be to spend elsewhere – and putting it towards those education fees instead.

Little changes for little ones go a long way

Saving a few rands here and there may not seem like much right now, but they certainly add up to make a big difference.

By doing what you can where possible, you’ll leave yourself with a bit more in the pot to spend throughout the year.

And even if you find that you can’t treat yourself because of all those little extras that creep up during the school term, just remember, it’s the thought that counts…
