Erinvale Country and Golf Estate5th Apr 2017
Community living in the heart of the Winelands
The distinguished Erinvale Estate is 20 years old this year—a mature estate with all those years’ experience of running a successful residential development for golfers, non-golfers, young families and senior citizens.
These days, Erinvale is attracting younger, family-orientated investors looking for a secure and attractive option that is conveniently located and has community at its core. Internet access is about to be improved with increased connectivity in the pipeline, while play parks and jungle gyms are being built for those with small children.
Erinvale is superbly located in the Lourens River Valley near Somerset West, a town that has become a haven for both local and international investors. Only 40 minutes from Cape Town and 20 minutes from the Cape Town International Airport, it offers country living at its best, in the heart of the Cape Winelands, in close proximity to an array of sporting facilities, and close to many safe swimming beaches. The secure and relaxed atmosphere in Somerset West is enhanced by a selection of top-class shopping centres and excellent educational institutions, making it ideal for families with school- and/or university-going children. The area has an excellent road infrastructure and further road improvements are being planned.
Erinvale makes the most of its outstanding location in the midst of wine farms and mountain peaks. And it has a breathtaking 360° view of False Bay. The residential and golf estate is surrounded by the spectacular Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges to the north and east of the estate, with the Helderberg Nature Reserve to the west, which turns into a picturesque pink and purple landscape during the spring and summer seasons. The air is fresh with the fragrance of traditional Cape fauna and flora that grow on the mountain slopes. Set in the Cape Floral Region, Erinvale’s ecosystem is a hub of biodiversity. Homeowners can experience nature in its truest form in the adjacent Helderberg Nature Reserve, which can be freely accessed throughout the year.
The estate comprises approximately 260 hectares. The residential and golf estate is fully developed and a selection of residential options are available, ranging from apartments to townhouses and freestanding homes. Investment opportunities are therefore varied. All 417 properties have a certain harmony in their design but still allow for individual interpretation of style and construction. The colour palette of the homes is made up of neutral shades, including white, beige and grey. Many homes have incorporated stonework into their design, and roofs are generally made from thatch or dark tiles. Most homes have excellent views of the surrounding vegetation, mountains, golf course and ocean. Home prices range from R5 million upwards. Houses do not stay on the market for long, which is an indication of the perceived value this estate offers.
Community living is an essential element at Erinvale, which is part of its appeal for families. October will see residents participate in the annual Champagne Breakfast Hike. More than 100 residents will gather to hike the scenic trails on the estate and nature reserve, with guest speakers entertaining residents, who will have the opportunity to get to know one another while enjoying a glass of bubbly and breakfast. For those less inclined to hike, Erinvale will host a family sports day one week after the Champagne Breakfast Hike. Events will include golf and boules, with a dinner following the day’s activities.
Erinvale has been host to many interesting guest speakers, including the distinguished Dr Tim Noakes, who has caused controversy with his promotion of the Banting diet of low carbohydrates and high fat. LCHF meals are now available at the Erinvale Clubhouse.
The estate is home to one of the most popular golf courses in the area. The Erinvale Golf Club has played host to many world-renowned tournaments, including the World Cup of Golf held in 1996 (only a year after its official opening), the SAA Open in 2003 and 2004, and the South African Disabled Open. The 18-hole golf course, which was designed by golfing legend Gary Player, is a challenging and intriguing course divided into two diverse segments. The first nine holes take you through the residential part of the estate, while the second nine lead towards the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. Memberships are available for non-residents.
The Erinvale Golf Club hosts more than 35 corporate golf days a year, and under the watchful eye of Golf Director Gavin Woodroffe (previously Director of Golf at the acclaimed Oubaai Golf Club), the club continues to thrive. Gavin’s move was motivated by “the prestigious nature of the golf club, the quality course, the setting and scenery, great climate and a good member base”. Non-residential members play 60 percent of the golf on the course, a staggering 27,000 rounds a year, membership to non-residents is encouraged.
The Terrace and Playa Bar overlook the immaculate course and cater for a variety of functions, product launches, book signings and corporate events, as well as regular soirees held by the estate community.
Erinvale provides everything that makes for safe, comfortable and community estate living. Its solid infrastructure makes it a sound lifestyle option. Indeed, it gives one a feeling of relaxing, feet up, in front of a warm fire—a feeling of truly being at home.
