A list of the best holiday destinations for South Africans keen to get away in winter 2023
As winter looms, many South Africans start thinking of spending the July school holidays in warmer climates. Whether it’s to escape the cold, experience a new country or culture or just take a break from the monotony of everyday life, there are some amazing destinations that offer a wonderful holiday experience for all the family (and even give you a bang for your Rand).
We’ve asked the travel experts for the five best destinations to consider for a cheeky winter getaway:
1. Enjoy the island life in Seychelles
The 115 islands that makeup Seychelles are known for their stunning beaches, tourist-friendly weather all year round, clear waters, and lush greenery. They’re also less than a five-hour plane journey away from South Africa, with several direct flights available from Johannesburg and Cape Town and no visa requirements.
‘The archipelago is home to popular beaches like Anse Lazio, Beau Vallon, and Anse Source d’Argent, which are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and soaking up the sun. Those looking for an extra special all-inclusive getaway will find plenty of family-friendly resorts, some on exclusive private islands, offering a host of water sports, land activities, accommodation, and gourmet dining and drinks included in the package,’ says Laura Hendel, Marketing Manager for Club Med Southern Africa.
2. Get culturally aware in Spain
If you’re willing to travel a bit further and go through the Schengen visa application then Europe and Spain, in particular, is never a bad choice. Almost the entire Spanish coast offers impressive beaches, be it San Sebastian in the north or Cadiz and Marbella in the south.
‘The Spanish city of Marbella with its storybook stone-paved streets, colourful doors and wide expanses of olive trees is the perfect destination for travellers looking to chase the sun in a culturally rich haven. The city has plenty of activities to offer, including golfing, water sports, shopping, and dining and let’s not forget the popular flamenco shows,’ says Hendel.
3. Take to the season on an Alaskan cruise

One unique and adventurous way to spend winter is to try an Alaskan cruise, which runs during their summer solstice from May to September. The week-long cruises usually begin in Vancouver and make six port stops along the way, sailing past several glaciers.
There are plenty of shore excursions at each port from kayaking through protected iceberg-dotted waterways to ice climbing, skiing, dog sledding, whale and marine life watching, and fishing.
‘Even though the sun only shines for about 20 hours a day in Alaska there is still time to do many traditional day-time activities throughout the day. One of the stops is Icy Strait Point which is one of the few places in the world where wildlife outnumbers humans,’ says travel writer Iga Motylska.
4. Get the best of both worlds in Turkey
Turkey is currently one of the most affordable holiday options for South Africans. The country offers idyllic scenery, culture, history and activities that are both diverse and intriguing. The nine-hour flight from Johannesburg is bearable and frequent and the eVisa on arrival is also easy to obtain.
‘Not only does the country boast summer weather perfect for that beach holiday, but it is also loved for its welcoming hospitality, shopping options and delectable combination of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. Young and older tourists alike will find something to entertain them from golfing, water sports and rafting to thematic excursions such as marine photography, canyoning to belly dancing,’ says Hendel.
5. Experience a proudly South African winter in Winelands
For a cheaper but equally amazing option, why not take in the magnificence of the Cape vineyards and escape to La Petite Ferme, a luxury boutique hotel and wine estate overlooking the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. Snuggle up next to a cosy fireplace, enjoy a glass of good wine, and soak up the beauty of the winter landscapes. South Africans can take advantage of up to 40% off on all winter rates until 30 September 2023.
