Meyersdal Eco Estate

You can have state-of-the-art everything that opens and closes, and easy access to schools, shops and business centres, and still be surrounded by wide open spaces filled with a variety of nature’s amazing beauty filled with kudu, wildebeest and zebra. It’s a kind of magic that’s hard to find in a modern world, and it’s called Meyersdal Eco Estate.

The estate itself, which consists of a mere 343 stands on its 400 hectares, is part of the 1 080 ha Meyersdal Nature Area. With less than 15% of the land developed, there are vast swathes of Highveld grassland filled with plenty of fauna and flora interspersed with a select few homes.

In keeping with the theme and ethos of the estate, only indigenous plants are used in the landscaping, and large tracts of land are left unspoilt and natural for the animals and birds. Game such as red hartebeest, steenbuck, Burchell’s zebra, black wildebeest, springbuck of course and even the huge, placid kudu once roamed freely among these hills, and now they’ve been reintroduced. As well as these reintroduced mammals, which total well over 200 individual animals, there are 98 recorded bird species which include the resident pair of Verreaux’s eagles, 28 species of reptile, five fish species and a host of butterflies, bees and bugs. Residents that are adventurous can explore the beauty of the estate along the 16 kilometres of mountain bike trails or the seven kilometres of hiking paths while enjoying nature with plenty of fresh air. And for those that are less adventurous, the estate can be explored in the comfort of your vehicle. And if you want more, the 680 ha Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is close by. With a very similar faunal and floral assemblage, the reserve is a bit more established, with more than 200 species of birds having been identified. And there are loads more hiking trails, where you may just spot a cautious zebra or a shy and elusive kudu.

The estate’s three dams, which are fed by natural springs, are a focus for wildlife and birds. And, of course, people. The homeowners’ association has created a spectacular view point to enjoy the vast open areas from high or to chill while having a relaxing sundowner as the sun slips away behind the koppie on which it over looks.

For those that love to spend more time in nature, the homeowners’ association has also created a wonderful campsite where you can pitch your tent under the open sky, braai some marshmallows and tell ghost stories. It’s a great place to watch birds, or just to relax with the family. Keen anglers can test their skill in the catch-and-release dams.

If you want fish to put on the braai, you’ll have to go to the nearby Meyersdal Mall. The Meyersdal Eco Estate has everything you would expect from a luxury residential community – tennis, squash and a well-appointed clubhouse with a bar spacious patio overlooking the nature area and magnificent function venue where you can celebrate all your milestones – birthdays, weddings and anniversaries – without having to leave the estate. There is no golf course on site, but the 6490-metre, par-72 Sid Brews-designed course at Glenvista Country Club is minutes away.

The architectural guidelines, while ensuring a harmonious and pleasing congruency, are not onerous. The style is contemporary, with a huge emphasis on indoor-outdoor flow, use of plants and water features. The gardens are all waterwise and mostly indigenous.

All the stands have been sold, with 85% occupied or still under construction. Residential stands range from 750 m2 to 3600 m2, so there is room to breath. And with 24/7 security, a state-of-the-art control room, controlled access and security patrols, you can breathe easy.

The entire perimeter fence is under CCTV surveillance. There’s also a conservation team to care for and manage the wildlife on the estate – so stringent security is in place for both man and beast. With all this, you would expect to be out in the sticks somewhere, but Meyersdal Eco Estate is a mere ten minutes from Johannesburg, and you can be in Sandton in half an hour. A quick zip on the N12 will also get you to OR Tambo in half an hour, and there are numerous retail centres close by, as well as a selection of good pre-schools, junior schools and high schools.

With its 400 hectares of unspoiled undulating hills and scenic beauty, Meyersdal Eco Estate is one of the largest and most exclusive estates in Gauteng. It’s the perfect balance between wild open space, rural tranquillity and urban convenience. It can be your happy place, where you retreat at the end of a long day in the city.
