It is a story of family, courage, and a love for the mountains.

As we celebrate 85 years of Many Happy Returns, we also celebrate the people who have shaped this valley and the possibilities that continue to grow here.

A letter, a proposal and a promise

It began with a letter, a marriage proposal and Bill Carte’s promise to build a farm “second-to-none in South Africa.” For 13 years, Bill and Ruth Carte worked to bring that dream to life. They raised four children and gradually transformed their mountain farm into a welcoming retreat. By the early 1950s, their guest farm could accommodate around 30 guests. Then, in 1954, Bill passed away from cancer. Ruth was left in a remote valley with a fledgling business and four young children, the youngest just six. Her family encouraged her to move to town and become a matron, but Ruth chose to stay. She continued building the dream they had begun together. We have always held our grandmother Ruth in the highest regard. Her courage, resourcefulness and commitment shaped the lives of the generations who followed. Today, that same valley continues to welcome families, offering time in nature, connection and the simple pleasure of being together.

Space to explore, time to reconnect

For South African families, the Drakensberg offers a chance to step away from busy routines and spend time in the outdoors. There are mountain paths to explore, forests to wander through and streams beside which to pause. Days can be filled with adventure or enjoyed at a gentler pace, with time to take in the views and settle into the rhythm of the mountains. Over the years, generations of guests have made The Cavern part of their own family story. Children who once explored these paths return with children of their own. Familiar places become the setting for new memories, and a mountain holiday becomes a much-loved tradition.

Possibility begins with opportunity

Our story also extends beyond the guests we welcome. Through our work in rural education, we hope to help children discover their abilities and find opportunities to develop them. Samkelo Mdakane’s journey is one such story. While attending Royal Drakensberg Primary, Sam visited the Drakensberg Boys Choir School for a concert. During the interval, visiting boys were invited to audition. Sam stepped forward, and his talent was immediately recognised. Funding was not available at the time, but a year later, friends came together to support him. Sam went on to complete his schooling at the Choir School, earning numerous awards and accolades. He later received a scholarship to Reddam House Umhlanga, where he served as Head Student in 2023, before continuing his music studies at the University of Pretoria. His journey reminds us of what can happen when talent is recognised, and a community helps open the door.

Many Happy Returns

After 85 years, we remain inspired by Ruth’s determination, by the families who return to this valley and by the young people whose stories are still beginning. Whether you are discovering the Northern Drakensberg for the first time or returning to a familiar mountain path, we invite you to come and enjoy this special corner of South Africa. There is still so much to explore, and always another memory to make.
