As matric learners enter the second half of the academic year and begin preparing for their final examinations, there is inspiration close to home.
Kingswood resident Abigail Kok was announced last year as the Top Matriculant of 2025 in South Africa. When asked about her accomplishments, Abigail said: ‘To be announced as the Top Matriculant of 2025 is something I still struggle to put into words. ‘Firstly, I would not be where I am without the people. My parents’ support, my brother’s encouragement, my teachers’ constant assistance (no matter the hour), and my friends’ reminder never to take life too seriously were all integral parts of my journey. By the grace of God, I find myself where I am today.
‘Matric was not without its challenges – balancing sport, culture, academics, and leadership, getting to know myself in the process, and learning how to serve others as best as possible stretched me in unexpected and invaluable ways. Yet, even in the busiest moments, laughter, playing sports whenever I could, and building amazing friendships carried me forward. ‘Looking back, matric was such a blessing.
I pray that each of the matrics of 2026 will flourish too, each in their own way, to be even greater than those who came before them.’ With the final matric examinations only a few months away, many families are navigating the pressures and expectations that come with this important year. Having experienced the journey at first hand, the parents of South Africa’s National Top Matriculant, Albert and Susi Kok, say that ‘it has been an honour to witness Abigail’s journey. ‘There were many ups and definitely a few downs, but she remained kind, dedicated, humble, and persevered.
‘Time management proved a bit challenging at times as she tried to juggle her sports, social commitments, and academics, but our main message was: work hard, always have fun, and your best is good enough. The whole class of 2025 deserves recognition – they all did so well, and may their stories inspire us all to soar even higher.’
Abigail is currently studying Data Science at the University of Stellenbosch and says that she is loving her journey. Her message to the matrics of 2026 is: ‘Work hard and work consistently, but remember to also enjoy the year – it is, after all, your final year of childhood.’
Top study tips for matrics
- Start preparing now – don’t wait for exams to get serious. Consistent revision now will reduce stress and boost confidence later.
- Practise past papers – they help you understand the exam format, improve time management, and identify areas that need more attention.
- Take care of yourself – get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks. A healthy mind and body are essential for academic success. Remember: Small, consistent efforts every day can make a big difference when exam season arrives.
