While there are many reasons for emigrating, financial affairs play a large part in both the decision to emigrate, and the success of immigration applications. Tax is, of course, a large part of an immigration-through-investment process, and it can be quite complex. Caleo Capital, a South African wealth management company with a global footprint, works closely with 12 Star Capital to ensure a smooth financial transition for South Africans emigrating to the USA.

Plan ahead

According to Garth Wellman from Caleo Capital, it’s important that investors must understand the money they need before leaving the country. ‘We clear up the financial side of things for applicants, and create a platform for migrating their wealth,’ he says.

It’s an intense process in which they ask clients personal questions such as:

  • What is your purpose with this?
  • What do you want to achieve with this?
  • What are you fearful of, and what is driving your decision to emigrate?

Funding mechanisms

Often, the perception is that one has to sell everything, including offshore investments, in order to be able to afford investing in the EB-5 programme. According to Wellman, this is not necessarily the case. ‘We help you to create leverage of the assets that you currently have in your balance sheet, in a very low interest rate environment.’

One essential aspect of funding your emigration – either by direct investment, or by leveraging existing investments – is the necessity to prove that the funds were legally obtained. What this means is that you must be able to prove that the funds were obtained by lawful business, salary, investments, property sales, inheritance, gift, loan or any other lawful means.

The whole emigration process can be phased over a long timeframe. ‘We make sure that the financial planning over that timeframe is very carefully done and plotted as steps,’ Wellman concludes. With Caleo Capital taking care of your financial affairs from this side, and 12 Star Capital managing the immigration process from the other, your move should be sweet and smooth.
